There are a number of different materials from which outdoor furniture can be constructed. However, one of the most popular although one of the most expensive types of materials used for outdoor garden furniture is teak wood. In this article we take a look at why teak outdoor garden furniture is proving so popular.

Reason 1 – Teak has a very high rubber content within it and this makes it naturally resistant to frost, water and heat. Plus not only does it have high levels of rubber in it, it also has large amounts of oil which help to protect the wood from all types of insects. In fact because of this wood’s durability it is able to withstand all types of weather and needs very little regular maintenance.

Reason 2 – Teak outdoor garden furniture unlike other wooden garden furniture needs no oils or polishes to be applied regularly to retain its original appearance. However, if allowed to stay outside over time the wood’s color will change and to prevent this from happening some people like to apply a good quality teak oil to theirs.

However, if the teak furniture is not cared for over time the natural oils in the wood become depleted and this can lead to the surface of the furniture being damaged. Along with the surface becoming rough, cracks may appear allow the right environment in which fungus can develop. It may be several years before you feel that your teak garden furniture needs maintaining, but if you care for it properly then it will last for years to come. Reason 4 – It is much easier to look after garden furniture that has been made using teak than other types of wood or metal. To care for yours you need just to wash it down regularly with some warm soapy water and a scrubbing brush. But if you have several pieces of teak garden furniture that need cleaning then using a high pressure sprayer on its most gentle setting instead.

If however the wood has not been cared for and has become badly weathered and mildew has appeared then it will need to be cleaned before it can be finished. To do this you will need to purchase a specialist cleaning product which will help to remove all dirt, mildew and fungus from the wood. But because these products contain specialist chemicals one needs to make sure that the area where cleaning is taking place is well ventilated and away from areas where it can cause damage to other things. Plus you need to make sure that you wear a good pair of sturdy gloves also.

After the teak has been cleaned and washed down now it needs time to dry out. To fully dry out it will take several days and only after this can the right kind of teak wood sealer be applied. Such sealers for teak outdoor garden furniture can be applied either with a foam brush or they come in a spray bottle. But both types will ensure that the wood is able to absorb enough of the sealer to provide it with the right level of protection. In one day two coats of the teak wood sealer need to be applied and after the second coat has been applied any excess needs to be removed by wiping it away with a clean cloth.
